Culture and Inclusion: Highlights from the Roundtable Hosted by “Caritas Kyiv”

Yesterday, representatives of the RCBU team took part in the roundtable discussion “Culture and Inclusion: Challenges, Solutions, and Prospects,” organized by the “Caritas Kyiv” Charitable Organization Charitable Foundation.

The event was well-organized and brought together accessibility experts from various fields—ranging from the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine to museums and civil society organizations representing people with disabilities. Participants discussed practical steps for adapting cultural institutions: from training staff on how to interact appropriately with visitors to addressing the needs of people with hearing impairments. Attendees had the opportunity to speak with each speaker individually and ask follow-up questions.

The issue of accessibility in cultural spaces is not an abstract one for us. For over 14 years, the RCBU has been working to make culture and information accessible to people with visual impairments: we produce tactile signs, mnemonic diagrams, Braille books, building facade signs, and tactile artwork for institutions throughout Ukraine. We know exactly which details matter when a space is adapted not just for the sake of a report, but so that a person can truly navigate it independently. We’re glad to see that this issue is receiving increasing attention at both the government and community levels.
