‘Safe forest without barriers": RCCU and the State Enterprise ‘Forests of Ukraine’ created a tactile map for accessibility of Vorotnivskyi reserve

Recently, the RCCU team had the opportunity to collaborate with the State Enterprise ‘Forests of Ukraine’ on an important inclusive project ‘Safe Forest without Barriers’. Its goal was to create an accessible space for people with visual impairments. As part of this project, we developed a tactile navigation map for the Vorotnivskyi Nature Reserve, which shows its landscape and key tourist locations.
The sign is made of composite material, which ensures its durability during long-term use and resistance to external conditions. The sign has clearly marked tactile symbols (bridges, toilet, garden, apiary, spring, etc.) that are easy to feel and help you navigate in space. The entire map is covered with various tactile textures that indicate certain zones and areas of space, described in the map legend in contrasting fonts for visually impaired people and duplicated in Braille for the blind. These special graphic elements are designed to facilitate orientation and perception of information and allow visually impaired visitors to orientate themselves in the reserve by touch. This approach is extremely important as it provides access to knowledge and facilitates everyday life.
Thanks to such initiatives, the space becomes more inclusive and accessible to everyone. More information about the event can be found on the Polissia Forest Office Facebook page.
